Being polite about it doesn’t mean “lying down and trying to not think about it”. If you’re telling people to go die, using broad and offensive generalizations, or triggering people then you’re clearly out line, and that’s when the “well people would probably respect you more if you’d be polite about it” comes into play. Saying “hey, that’s really offensive. Don’t do that. That’s wrong.” Then possibly explain WHY it’s offensive or wrong, you’re still being polite about it without being triggering or offensive. No, you’re not obligated to explain, it’s just a helpful bonus like getting whip cream or marshmallows with your hot chocolate.

Classic misunderstanding.
